Renowned as one of Taiwan's top four universities, NYCU has carved out a prominent place in the semiconductor domain, serving as a crucial cradle for nurturing talent in Taiwan's semiconductor industry. Notable alumni include Datuk Pua Khein-Seng, the Malaysian 'father of the pendrive.'

While hosting the 2023 Malaysian Education Officials and High School Principals Delegation to Taiwan, Chen-Yi Lee stated that the university plans to introduce a new Bachelor's degree program in Semiconductor Engineering, set to commence admissions next year. The university eagerly welcomes more Malaysian students to enroll.

He highlighted the university's collaboration with TSMC in establishing special scholarships this year. The aim is to encourage students from Southeast Asian universities to apply for admission to the university's semiconductor-related graduate programs, thereby expanding the talent pool.

Graduates from various universities, including the University of Malaya, the National University of Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Hanoi University in Vietnam, Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia, the National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University, are eligible to apply for these scholarships, which support the pursuit of semiconductor-related research programs at NYCU.

Wen-Yang Hsu, the Director of the International Affairs Office at NYCU, emphasized that opportunities for scholarships for overseas students in the university's undergraduate programs are limited. However, Malaysian students are an exception. Datuk Pua Khein-Seng, as an alumnus, has generously donated funds, significantly contributing to the availability of scholarships for Malaysian students. As a result, they are the recipients of the most scholarships among overseas students.

 

NYCU Continues Malaysian Student Recruitment for Top Semiconductor Opportunities

Zhang-Yuan Chen, Joint President of the Malaysia-Taiwan Alumni Association and leader of the delegation, expressed that there is a significant gap in the semiconductor job market. It is estimated that each person could secure 3.7 jobs in the global semiconductor field. However, there is a need for more science and engineering students in Malaysia, and the goal is to attract more students to develop an interest in science and engineering.

Mong-Hwa Chin, Associate Professor and Director of the International Affairs Office, stated that our teachers boast the highest proportion of industry cooperation in Taiwan, with sixty-five percent of the Hsinchu Science Park senior managers being NYCU graduates.

The university invited several Malaysian students to share their experiences with the delegation. Zheng-Yang Chen, a major in mechanical engineering, highlighted the university's abundant resources, emphasizing the availability of various machines for student use and providing valuable hands-on experience.

Liken Huang, majoring in Electrical Engineering, expressed his contentment at NYCU, emphasizing that he has become more independent. He mentioned the abundance of part-time job opportunities in Taiwan, allowing him to find ways to earn money on his own.

Mu-Ping Liu stated that he heavily relied on his parents in Malaysia. However, due to the limitation of being able to return only once a year, he has become more mature in handling things.

NYCU will continue its efforts to recruit students from Malaysia, with a focus on enhancing their professional capabilities during their academic tenure. Students with overseas Chinese backgrounds proficient in Mandarin possess highly competitive qualifications. This background allows graduates to enter the world's top semiconductor enterprises and secure employment within the Hsinchu Science Park.
